My CD drive is not reading DVD Roms

I've tried several DVDs and noe are working: I inster the DVD and expect the drive to recognize the DVD and begin to play using "DVD Player" but after a few tries (I can hear the drive trying/clikcing/booting up) the DVD gets spit right back out.

Is there a way to go in and clean the heads myself or do I have to buy a new one...Since the computer's pretty old (about 5yo) it may not be worth it.

Suggestions?

PowerBook, Mac OS X (10.5.1), G4

Your CD/DVD player uses a laser beam that is focused on the disc by a lens, one for CDs and one for DVDs. If this lens accumulates dust the beam will be diffused or incorrectly focused, and the player won't function correctly.

At your local computer store or an office supply store, you can buy a cleaning disc that incorporates a number of minute brushes. Load this disc into your player and follow the instructions for cleaning. The process will take only a minute or so.

 Cheers, Tom 😉
